pbRun is a 3rd-party (donationware) datafield specifically targeted at improving the guided run workout experience when running with power.
Setting up pbRun
It can be added to any activity profile (e.g. ‘Run’, ‘Walk’) and provides a different way to view and execute structured workouts.
Once installed from Connect IQ, use the Connect IQ app (on your mobile) to navigate to Settings for pbRun. There you can enter your Threshold Power, Weight and other settings, and choose what metrics to show when using pbRun.
To finish setting up pbRun, on your watch open the Activity type where you’ll use pbRun (e.g. the ‘Run’ activity) and add a new one-field data screen containing pbRun.
Note that if you’re using pbRun with a Stryd footpod, you should also ensure you’ve included the Stryd Zones datafield in the Activity type, so that Stryd metrics are saved in your workout files.
Height & weight settings
Use the Connect IQ app (on your mobile) to navigate to Settings for pbRun, and enter your weight.
pbRun does not need your height.
Auto-lap, Auto-pause, Auto-calibrate, Recording Frequency
These settings are adjusted outside of pbRun.
See the Stryd footpod with a Garmin page or Wrist-based power with a Garmin page.
Adjusting what's displayed on your watch
Use the Connect IQ app (on your mobile) to navigate to Settings for pbRun, where you can choose the metrics you want to see.
Reviewing/Updating Threshold Power
When using WKO, Threshold Power is referred to as Functional Threshold Power (Critical Power).
Manual FTP
If you’ve chosen to display power numbers as ‘% of FTP’ or ‘% of FTP (decimal number)’ pbRun needs to know your Functional Threshold Power (Critical Power).
Use the Connect IQ app (on your mobile) to navigate to Settings for pbRun, where you can enter your Threshold Power in the Functional Threshold Power (Critical Power) field.
Power Averaging
pbRun can display real-time power, smoothed (over 3s, 5s, 10s or 30s), lap power and previous lap power.
It can display power in Watts, Watts/kg and as a percentage of threshold power.
Displaying power, pace and heart rate
Use the Connect IQ app (on your mobile) to navigate to Settings for pbRun, where you can choose 3s (smoothed) power, pace and heart rate as displayed metrics.
Moving to the next lap
To move to the next lap, press the bottom right button (labelled Back or Lap).
Using structured workouts
You can create structured workouts (with multiple steps, often used for interval workouts) using the Garmin Connect website or the Garmin Connect mobile app, as described in Creating a custom workout.
You can also create structured workouts using TrainingPeaks, Final Surge, Intervals.icu or other 3rd-party websites.
Once created (and for 3rd-party websites, synced to Garmin Connect), structured workouts are downloaded to your watch using native Garmin functionality.
When you start a run, if there is a workout planned for that day your watch will ask if you want to execute the workout. Alternatively, you can use the ‘training’ menu on your watch to find and select a structured workout.
And then while running, switch to the pbRun data screen.
I'd like to give feedback ...
If you have feedback – perhaps something that’s missing/incorrect, or something that would improve the content of Part 3, please let me know in the from1runner2another Facebook group.
