Behind the numbers: Are you leaving data on the table?

When starting something new, you’ll have questions. Everyone does.

How do I …? Am I doing it right? Where can I find out …? Who can I ask about …?

These posts signpost resources you may (or may not) know about.

Resources that can help answer your questions.

Stryd

Stryd, Inc. is a fitness technology startup based in Boulder, Colorado, that pioneered the world’s first wearable running power meter. Founded in 2013, the company has transformed how runners gauge their training intensity and effort.

Stryd’s core mission is to change the way people run by providing an objective, environment-independent measure of training and racing intensity. To this day, the Stryd power meter is the only power meter to have been independently verified more than 10 times to be repeatable (same effort under the same conditions produces the same power number) and concurrently valid (the numbers align to previously validated measures of running physiology, like VO2 consumption).

While Stryd started out with a core mission of bringing power to runners, recent focus has been on tracking metrics like leg spring stiffness, ground contact time, and visual 3D foot paths to help athletes identify left-right imbalances and prevent overuse injuries, use of power in sprints and speed events, and the use of AI to provide adaptive training.

Website

Stryd’s website contains a comprehensive set of support articles that are focused on the Stryd power meter.

But there are also articles that are more broadly applicable. This post focuses on those.

Stryd Learning Center

The Learning Center includes the ‘Stryd Power Foundations‘ course. The first three modules provide an overview of power, including what Power is, Critical Power, your Power-Duration Curve and how to manage Training Load using RSS and RSB.

Readable in 5-10 minutes, and with a few videos that take a further 10-15 minutes, the course is a useful grounding in power and power-based metrics.

Stryd Blog

Actively maintained, the blog contains articles about new products and features. It also contains articles about elite runners and running coaches that are using Stryd to improve their (or their runners’) performances.

I use the blog to stay in touch with what’s being achieved using running power.

Stryd White Papers

Deep in the blog there are a few articles that are more research-oriented, grouped under ‘Validation & White Papers‘ (these are also accessible under the Validation link in the blog header menu), and include:

  • Running power meters & quality data – evaluates the accuracy of the Stryd’s measurement of running power, ground time, and vertical oscillation, by comparing it with a lab grade force plate-based treadmill and a metabolic measurement system.
  • Adding air resistance costs – how Stryd accounts for the wind’s effect on the runner.
  • Defining running power – a document that uses scientific literature and understanding to answer many of the questions about the meaning of power in running, to clarify how it relates to power in cycling, and to describe the potential for its use.

Stryd Coaching

The Stryd Power Coaching Program is for coaches wanting to use power in their coaching.

There are various benefits, including:

  • the PowerCenter coaching view, which provides access to your runners’ workout results and metrics.
  • being listed in the Stryd directory of coaches that offer power-based coaching.
