Initial Setup
You don’t need a running watch to use the Stryd footpod – you can use Stryd with your mobile phone.
Once you’ve installed the Stryd Mobile app from Google Play or the App Store, open the mobile app and follow the prompts to:
- create a login to Stryd PowerCenter
- pair your footpod to the mobile app
- set your height and weight
Settings that apply to every watch / power meter
Based on the experience of hundreds of runners who’ve used power, there are some watch / power meter settings that every runner wishes they’d understood or configured when getting started. These are detailed on the Settings & Configs page.
Because these instructions are quite detailed, the following sections are collapsed – please expand the sections you’d like to know more about.
Height & Weight: ‘set it and forget it’
As explained in Settings & Configs, it’s important to ‘set and forget’ your height and weight.
Instructions for setting your height and weight are on the Stryd website.
Height and Weight are entered in the Stryd mobile app (for iOS or Android).
Auto-lap: not available when using a mobile phone
As explained in Settings & Configs, it’s important to disable auto-lap when running intervals using a structured workout.
Auto-lap is not available when using a mobile phone.
Auto-pause: not available when using a mobile phone
As explained in Settings & Configs, it’s important to disable auto-pause, and never manually pause when Running with Power.
Auto-pause is not available when using a mobile phone.
Auto-calibrate: not available when using a mobile phone
As explained in Settings & Configs, it’s important to disable auto-calibration if you want to track changes in your Running Effectiveness changes..
Auto-calibration is not available when using a mobile phone.
Recording frequency: the app always records ‘every second’
As explained in Settings & Configs, it’s important to choose ‘every second recording’ so that power averages (used for your metrics) are calculated correctly.
Fortunately, the Stryd Mobile app always records data ‘every second’.
Power averaging: The app only shows real-time power
As explained in Settings & Configs, real-time power is ‘spiky’ – you may prefer your power numbers to be averages.
Unfortunately, the Stryd Mobile app only offers real-time power.
Power units: The app only offers Watts
As explained in Settings & Configs, it may be possible to display your power targets and actuals as Watts, Watts/kg or percentage of Threshold Power (depending on the power units available in the app you’re using).
Unfortunately, the Stryd Mobile app only offers Watts.
Displaying Pace & HR: You are limited to Power and Pace; neither the footpod nor your mobile has a sensor that can monitor HR
As explained in Settings & Configs, some of the activities in the book ask you to display power, pace and HR on your watch so that you can keep track of changes in those metrics as you begin to experience running with power.
Unfortunately, while it is possible to see pace using the Stryd Mobile app (drag up from the bottom of the screen), it’s not possible to see heart rate, as neither the footpod nor your mobile has a sensor that can monitor HR.
Moving to the next lap: Select the next lap symbol at the top right of the display
As explained in Settings & Configs, it’s worth familiarising yourself with the way to move to the next lap before you find that you want to do it but don’t know how.
Select the next lap symbol at the top right of the display (a triangle connected to a line).
Settings to double-check
There are no additional settings to be double-checked.
Adjusting what’s displayed on your watch
To start a run on your mobile, change to the calendar view then select the plus [+] icon at the top right of the screen. You mobile will connect to your footpod.
When ready, select the blue triangle to start your run.
Unfortunately, you cannot customise the display.
Download => Execution => Upload
You can purchase training plans via Stryd, TrainingPeaks or Final Surge.
You can also create workouts using those apps and using Intervals.icu (although you may need to be using the paid or subscription version in some cases).
Downloading & Executing workouts
Structured workouts are downloaded from Stryd PowerCenter to your watch using the Stryd Mobile app.
If your planned workouts are in TrainingPeaks or Final Surge, you can connect these apps to the Stryd PowerCenter to make them available to the Stryd Mobile app.
The process to download and execute workouts is described on the How to do a Structured Workout page on the Stryd website.
Uploading completed workouts: All Stryd metrics are uploaded automatically
Completed workouts are uploaded to Stryd PowerCenter by the Stryd Mobile app.
All Stryd metrics are recorded and uploaded in your workout file – you don’t need to manually sync using the Stryd Mobile app.
If you use TrainingPeaks or WKO as your reviewing app, you can connect TrainingPeaks to the Stryd PowerCenter to transfer completed workouts (which will also make them available to WKO).
