TrainingPeaks WebApp / Mobile

Magnifying glass laid on charts & metrics

TrainingPeaks WebApp / Mobile

TrainingPeaks allows you to plan, track, and analyse your training all in one place. You can sync your account with your favourite apps and devices for real-time workout guidance and monitor your fitness progress with powerful data tools. Plus, training plans and coaching services guide you along the way.

The browser-based WebApp summarises uploaded workouts and fitness data, and you can use it with a training plan or with a coach. Premium adds the ability to plan workouts, analyse fitness trends and more.

The Mobile app provides on the go access to planned and completed workouts, along with a Performance Management Chart to monitor your training.

TrainingPeaks is available to runners for free. Some features require a subscription to TrainingPeaks Premium 💲.

Planning

TrainingPeaks:

💲 WebApp offers a library of (paid) power-based training plans.

💲 enables you to adjust training plans, create your own plans, and build your own workouts.

✅ can download workouts planned in TrainingPeaks to Garmin, COROS, Wahoo, Suunto and Polar watches. You can also sync planned workouts to the Stryd ecosystem.
❌ You can download planned workouts to Apple Watches (using the TrainingPeaks app), but only if you use the Apple Workout app to execute the workout (the workout app has some shortcomings when using wrist-based power).

Reviewing

TrainingPeaks:

✅ accepts completed workouts from all sports watch brands and from Apple Health. You can also sync completed workouts to/from the Stryd ecosystem.

✅ provides summary metrics for completed runs, including workout averages, ‘peaks’ by duration or distance, time in zones and per-lap averages.

❌ does not provide second-by-second review of uploaded runs.
❌ cannot show actual power vs. target.

❌ does not calculate threshold power (FTP) or a Power Duration Curve (PDC), instead relying on WKO for that.

💲 provides training load balance (Training Stress Balance) as part of a performance management chart.

❌ does not provide ramp rate or running effectiveness.

❌ cannot calculate power targets for upcoming events and races.

Coaching

TrainingPeaks:

💲 enables coaches to invite runners to connect to them to see basic per-runner metrics.

💲 enables coaches to plan workouts for their runners.

💲 supports communication between coaches and their runners.

✅ can ‘go wider’ than power, to include information about sleep, fatigue and other non-quantifiable information.

In summary

TrainingPeaks works well as a coaching tool, with the ability to plan workouts for individual runners, download the workouts to all sports watches, upload completed workouts and provides two-way communication between coaches and runners.

While TrainingPeaks does provide some summary metrics, it does not calculate all of the core power metrics (e.g. Threshold, PDC, ramp rate or running effectiveness). Instead it relies on WKO – an extra cost – to provide those. It also does not calculate race-day targets.

Bottom line – a better platform for coaching than for individual runners.
